Canvas rugs, known today as floorcloths, had their start in 18th century England. Initially used by the wealthy, the designs and patterns mimicked parquet flooring, tile and marble. As these useful furnishings found their way into middle class homes, the variety of patterns grew. When American colonists became independent from England, they also began to create their own floorcloths. Eventually the development of linoleum eliminated the interest in these rugs. However, in the past few decades, the desire to decorate homes in a more personal way has stimulated their popularity. Unique designs are made in a variety of styles and colors, using many techniques. This gives today's floorcloths the ability to be created for any style interior.

     Floorcloths made by Meadowsweet Garden are hand painted on hemmed, medium or heavy weight, gesso primed canvas. The gesso prepares the canvas for the decorative painting. Although floorcloths may be stenciled, or stamped, those made here are hand painted with acrylic paint. Completed floorcloths are finished and sealed with four coats of non-yellowing sealer. This makes the product durable and easy to care for.

     The vibrant color, smooth surface, and non-porous finish, make these floorcloths desirable in many areas of the home. A water resistant surface is functional in kitchens, bathrooms, or entry ways. A wide range of color choices and long lasting durability make floorcloths a practical choice for children's rooms and play spaces. They do not fade and spills clean up easily. Your floorcloths will be beautiful and long lasting on any smooth, level surface.

     With little maintenance a floorcloth will provide many years of use. For shipping and storage, floorcloths are gently rolled. (Never fold your canvas floorcloth. The creases will not smooth out and the paint may crack.) When you wish to lay out your floorcloth, gently unroll at room temperature. Do not force the cloth flat. Gently warming with a hair dryer may speed the flattening process. Weights, such as books, placed along the edges should complete the flattening in a few hours.
     Your floorcloth must always be placed on a smooth, hard, and level surface. Brick or tile with grout lines may cause creases or tears underfoot. It is not suggested that floorcloths be placed on another carpet. Smooth wood, laminate, or vinyl surfaces, are all suggested. When furniture is placed on the floorcloth, be sure felt pads are used on the furniture legs. This will avoid scratches or tears.
     Your floorcloth has been treated with a special sealer. Spills are easily wiped from the surface. Soil washes away quickly with a sponge dampened with diluted dishwashing soap. You could refresh the shine with bowling alley wax, but this could make your rug slick. Carefully treated, your floorcloth will last for years.
